I have owned the Tung Sol 7236, 5998, 6AS7G, Western Electric 421A, a Tung Sol 421A (you read that right), various 6080's. No doubt the 421A is the best power tube I have heard on the Crack. The 5998 comes in second. However, not all 5998's are created equal - I have owned five and have heard variances in their sound quality. They are all very good, but one I have in particular stands above the others - sounds closer to the 421A.

5998's can be gotten for a good price if you are patient. The 7236 is a good tube, but I wouldn't say it is head-and-shoulders above the 6080's. One particular 6080 I like is the Mullard CV2984.As far as driver tubes go, the Mullard CV4003 is a great tube, one of the best 12AU7's available.
You can buy them NOS on Ebay from Great Britain for around $60 USD. For good 7236's he needs the round getter ones with the orange text. They are miles ahead of the square getter black text 7236's (TungSol).Obviously non of these will be as good as an OG 5998 though.OP can also try soucing a NOS TungSol 6080, those are definitely better than the RCA 6AS7G. But had to find.Found this for $15 -And these are the 7236's im talking about -As for the Speedball addon, is a weirdo haha! I love everything about my speedball add on, provided i did add quite a few modifications -.
